Thanks to college tactics, Cooper Lutkenhaus should become the first 16-year-old to compete for the United States in the history of the world of the athletics championships.
Lutkenhaus went from seventh place with 200 meters to finish the finalist at Donavan Brazier in the final of the 800m on Sunday at the Outdoor Championships Toyota Usa Tath and Field in Eugene, in Oregon.

“Since the college, it is really a place (200 to do) that I am really pushed,” said Lutkenhaus, an increased junior of the Northwest High School outside Dallas. “I just decided to go back to the college tactics.”
The first three qualified for the September world championships in Tokyo.

Lutkenhaus will break the record of the youngest American man to participate in the worlds – Erriyon Knighton in 200m at 18 years old, 5 months old in 2022.
The time of Lutkenhaus in the final of Sunday – 1 minute, 42.27 seconds – broke the U18 world record of 1.1 seconds. (U18 World Records are intended for athletes who are 17 years old or less of the year of their competition. Kenyan Timothy Kitum ran 1: 42.53 for the 2012 Olympic bronze at the age of 17, but was 18 years later that year.)
Lutkenhaus entered nationals with a personal record of 1:45:45 (an hour record from the American high school) of the Nike Outdoor Nationals High School in June, also at Hayward Field in Oregon.
This brought him 13th in the field of 800m American male by the best moment of 2025.

“Obviously, it was not supposed to do the team,” he said. “Many people didn’t think I would make the final.”
The drop of public relations of three seconds from Lutkenhaus launched it from the outside of the fastest Americans in history in the fourth behind the best moments of Hoppel, Hoey and Brazier.
His time would have been the American record on August 10, when Hoppel lowered the record of 1: 42.34 from Brazier to win the 2019 world title to 1: 41.67.
Course at Northwest High Start on August 13.
“I’m going to miss a school,” to go to the worlds in Tokyo, said Lutkenhaus. “But I hope that teachers will understand.”
