M. 1000: The unique success of Cameron Young, plus a deep dive in the long list of PGA Tour winners

Say hello to Mr. 1000, Cameron Young.

Young became the 1,000th unique winner in the history of the PGA Tour on Sunday when he won the Wyndham championship.

Young’s victory occurred 165 years after Willie Park won the Open 1860 championship, a victory considered the first of the PGA Tour. Although the tour was not officially founded before the end of 1968, it retroactively recognized 414 unique winners before its separation from the PGA of America. When Dick Lotz won the Alameda County Open on January 12, 1969 – the same day that Charlie Sifford took the Los Angeles Open – he became the first winner of the PGA independent.
