Paula Martin Sampedro of Stanford put an exclamation point over his week in Wales with a great-nine 30 which included five consecutive birds.
The Spaniard, who played alongside the winner of Smyth Salver twice, Lydia Ko, closed with a 68 of less than 68 to zoom the board of directors and currently holds a share of eighth at 4 sous. Its 30 on the nine inwards is the lowest of the week by two strokes.
“Honestly, even in the first nine of the couple, the Bogeys she made, she obtained really unpleasant lips,” said Ko.
“At that time, if some of them fell, it would have been an incredible turn. It was always an incredible round, and it was fun to play alongside her today.”
Martin Sampedro wraps the coveted Smyth Salver for low amateur honors while Carla Bernat fought with a 78 Sunday to finish at 9 years for the championship, while Jeneath Wong fired 82 to finish at 17.
Martin Sampedro becomes the fourth Spanish player to win the award, joining Marta Figueras-Dotti (1982), Elisa Serramia (2003) and Luna Sobron (2015). His coach and shopping cart for the week, Alejandro Larrazabal, won the British amateur at Royal Porthcawl in 2002.
“My first three, four holes were really difficult,” said Martin Sampedro. “There was no way that I got two out of 1, it is one by 4. Then, the first four holes, with perfect conditions are already so difficult, so I knew it was going to be a difficult start.
“And then I managed to stay calm and make a couple, then I started to see the lines better … It was definitely a good stretch of Birdie on the nine rear.”
The list of recent winners of Smyth Salver is full of stars.
The prize, awarded to the low amateur of the Aig Women’s British Open, served as a strong indicator of future success, with names like Danielle Kang, Georgia Hall, Leona Maguire, Jeeno Thitikul, Ko, and more recently, Lottie Woad, receiving honor.
